You have found the right vehicle and only one question is holding you back: how long before you drive off in it? The short answer: sometimes less than 48 hours, most often a few days, and longer if your shopping stretches out. The useful answer is the detail of each step, because that is where days are gained (or lost).
Here is the complete journey of a purchase from a dealer in Quebec, step by step, with realistic timelines and ways to shorten them.

Before you even start shopping, set your budget: the weekly or monthly payment you can sustain, insurance and maintenance included. A financing pre-approval then turns that budget into concrete buying power. Filled out online, the application takes about ten minutes; at Auto Durocher, the pre-approval application takes about 5 minutes, with no impact on your credit score.
Arriving pre-approved changes the entire rest of the journey: you shop in the right price range and the financing step is already half done.
This is the step whose length is up to you. Some buyers spot their vehicle in one evening in the online inventory; others compare for weeks. A useful reference point: the label on the vehicle at the dealership. It must show the price, the year, the serial number, the mileage, the warranty category and, where applicable, the vehicle’s previous use (rental car, demonstrator, etc.).
Read it every time: it gives you several answers in one minute. To go further, see the 5 questions to ask a dealer before buying.
Plan for at least an hour on site: a test drive in varied conditions (city, highway), a visual inspection, questions about maintenance. It is also the time to check the vehicle’s history: history report, recall registry, VIN check (the vehicle identification number). Our guide explains how to check a used car’s history without missing anything.
An hour well invested here is worth more than regrets afterward. No step in the process deserves your time more than this one.
Once the vehicle is chosen, the financing file is sent to the financial institutions. With a simple credit file and complete documents, approval often comes the same day, sometimes within hours. A more complex file (self-employment, damaged credit, income to document) can take a few business days, the time it takes the institution to review the documents.
This is where your choice of dealer affects the timeline. At Auto Durocher, we work with 18 financial institutions, which lets us submit your file to the right lender the first time, including for second-chance credit. And every file is handled without judgment.
The dealer must give you a written contract showing, among other things, their name and permit number, the vehicle’s price, the taxes, the total amount to pay and the characteristics of the warranties. Take the time to read it and have any verbal promise written in.
A point many buyers do not know: there is no 10-day cooling-off period for a vehicle purchase, contrary to a widespread belief. Once the contract is signed, you are committed.

Between signing and delivery, the vehicle goes through the shop: final inspection, maintenance, detailing, sometimes a repair agreed to in the contract. Generally count on 24 to 72 hours, more if a part has to be ordered. A vehicle that is already inspected and ready to deliver can shorten this step to a single day.
At delivery, before signing the delivery clause, go over everything again: the price, the options and the serial number match the contract, the mileage is consistent, the body and the accessories are in order.
Good news: this step is the simplest one at a dealership. Most dealers take care of the registration for you through the SAAQ’s online services: you leave with your plate or with a temporary registration certificate valid for at most 10 days, while things are finalized. The taxes (GST and QST) are collected directly by the dealer at the time of sale.
Two things remain on your side: bring your driver’s licence, and call your insurer before taking possession so your coverage is active the moment you leave the lot.
And if you buy between December 1 and March 15, remember that a 7-day window is provided to fit a purchased vehicle with compliant winter tires. All the details are in our article on Quebec’s winter tire law.
You might think so, but rarely. Between private parties, the transfer of ownership must be done in person at an SAAQ service outlet, with the seller and buyer present together (or with a power of attorney), during business hours. You therefore have to coordinate two schedules, sometimes wait for an appointment, and you handle all the paperwork yourself.
Above all, the verification steps the dealer has already done remain entirely your responsibility: a mechanical inspection to arrange at a garage, a history to check, financing to find on your own. And the protections differ: no mandatory label and no warranty of good working order, which only apply at a dealer. The listed price may look lower, but the journey is longer, and you walk it alone.
Put end to end, the journey looks like this:
What shortens the timeline: a pre-approval in hand, complete documents, an already-inspected vehicle. What stretches it: an incomplete file, a repair needed before delivery, or waiting for the perfect model.
Our Auto Durocher advice: prepare your documents before even choosing the vehicle: driver’s licence, recent proof of income, proof of residence and a void cheque. It is waiting for these documents, much more than the approval itself, that adds days to the process. Our article on the documents required to buy a used car lists them all.
The purchase itself is fast: preparation is what makes the difference. A pre-approval takes a few minutes and frames everything else. The test drive and the checks deserve at least an hour. Financing approval often comes the same day with a complete file. The contract is read before signing. And registration, at a dealership, is usually settled on the spot.

At Auto Durocher, we built the process to be fast without ever being rushed: online pre-approval in 5 minutes, a large inventory of inspected vehicles, and a team that takes care of the registration for you in Mirabel. Start with the pre-approval application, and the rest will follow quickly.
