Winter Tires in Quebec: Dates, Law and Tips to Prepare Your Used Vehicle (2026-2027)

Every fall, the same question comes back: when should you install your winter tires, and what exactly does Quebec law require? If you have just bought a used vehicle, or if you are shopping for one right now, the question comes up even earlier: your next winter starts now, not the night before the first storm.

In this article, we go over the legal dates, the famous official pictogram, the fines, the exceptions that directly affect used vehicle buyers, and our tips for choosing tires suited to your vehicle, your budget and Quebec roads.

What does Quebec law say about winter tires?

The Highway Safety Code is clear: from December 1 to March 15, every passenger vehicle registered in Quebec must be equipped with four compliant winter tires. The requirement also covers taxis and rental vehicles, but not trailers or vehicles registered outside the province.

One important nuance: these dates are a legal minimum, not a weather forecast. In Quebec, a first snowfall in November is nothing unusual, yet the law requires nothing before December. Being legal and being safe are two different things.

The mountain and snowflake pictogram: the only true reference

To comply with the law, a winter tire must carry the official pictogram: a symbol showing a mountain topped with a snowflake, moulded directly into the tire’s sidewall. This logo certifies that the tire meets recognized winter traction standards. Studded tires are also accepted.

An ordinary “all-season” tire, even a nearly new one, does not satisfy the requirement if it does not carry this pictogram. Before buying a used vehicle that comes “with the winter tires,” take the time to check the sidewall of each tire. The seller can be mistaken, even in good faith; the pictogram never lies.

Why not wait until December 1?

The rubber of an all-season tire starts to harden once the temperature drops below 7°C, which reduces its grip and lengthens braking distances, even on dry pavement. Winter tires, designed with a compound that stays flexible in deep cold, keep their bite well below that threshold.

The right benchmark is therefore not the calendar but the thermometer: when temperatures hover around 7°C for several days in a row, generally between mid-October and mid-November in Quebec, it is time to install your winter tires. Booking early with your garage also spares you the late-November rush, when appointments become scarce and wait times stretch out.

What fine do you risk without winter tires?

Driving without compliant winter tires between December 1 and March 15 exposes you to a fine of $200 to $300, plus fees. No demerit points are taken, but the bill remains steep for an easily avoidable oversight.

There is, however, a bigger cost than the fine: in the event of an accident on a winter road, non-compliant tires can complicate your claims and, above all, they genuinely increase the risk of a collision. The math is therefore easy.

Just bought a used vehicle? The law gives you 7 days

This is the most useful exception for a buyer to know: a vehicle purchased during the mandatory period benefits from a period of 7 days following the purchase to be fitted with winter tires. A similar grace period applies at the end of a long-term lease.

For other special situations (a vehicle being sold outside Quebec, for example), the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec issues temporary exemption certificates through SAAQclic or at service outlets. These certificates help in a pinch, but they are no substitute for winter preparation.

Are studded tires allowed in Quebec?

Yes, but only from October 15 to May 1, on passenger vehicles, taxis and commercial vehicles of no more than 3,000 kg. Studs offer superior grip on bare ice, an asset if you live in a rural area or drive on secondary roads that see little de-icing.

In the city, where asphalt dominates, studs are noisier and rarely necessary: a good recent winter tire does the job very well. The right choice depends on your commutes.

How to choose your winter tires?

All winter tires carry the same pictogram, but they are not all equal. Three criteria should guide your shopping:

• Your commutes and driving style: cleared highways, city streets, icy country roads? A North Shore commuter and a forestry worker in the Laurentians do not need the same tire.
• Your budget: as a general rule, price reflects the quality of the compound and durability. A compliant entry-level tire already protects far better than an all-season; a reputable tire will often last more winters.
• The tire’s design: sipes, rubber compound, shoulder blocks for cornering grip. Your garage can translate these terms into concrete recommendations for your vehicle.

One last habit that pays off: buy the exact size recommended by the manufacturer (it appears on the label inside the door frame) and have the tires installed by a recognized shop, with proper torque and verified pressure. An excellent tire poorly installed loses part of its qualities.

Used winter tires: good or bad idea?

Buying a used vehicle that comes with its winter tires, or buying used tires separately, can be a real saving, provided you check three things. First, tread depth: the legal minimum is 1.6 mm, but the SAAQ and CAA-Quebec recommend starting the winter with at least 4.8 mm (6/32 of an inch) for adequate grip in snow.

Next, the tire’s age: the DOT code moulded into the sidewall indicates the week and year of manufacture, and rubber more than six to eight years old hardens even if the tire shows little wear. Finally, uniformity: four identical tires, evenly worn, with no cracking or questionable repairs. When in doubt, have them inspected before buying.

Our Auto Durocher advice: when you shop for a used vehicle in the fall, always ask whether the winter tires are included, in what size, and measure their remaining tread. Four winter tires in good condition represent several hundred dollars in value: it is a negotiating point as concrete as the mileage.

Prepare the rest of the vehicle, not just the tires

The SAAQ recommends a complete check-up before the cold season, and that goes double for a used vehicle whose habits you do not yet know:

• battery and charging system (starts at -25°C show no mercy to a tired battery);
• wipers, defrosting and a good supply of winter washer fluid;
• fluids: antifreeze, brakes, engine oil;
• brakes, lights, belts and spare tire;
• an emergency kit in the trunk: snow brush, shovel, booster cables, blanket.

If you have just bought from a dealership, a good part of these points has already been covered by the inspection. It is still worth knowing what was checked, and when: ask the question, the answer says a lot about the seller’s seriousness.

What to remember before the 2026-2027 winter

• Winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15 for every passenger vehicle registered in Quebec.
• Only tires carrying the mountain and snowflake pictogram count, or studded tires (allowed from October 15 to May 1).
• A fine of $200 to $300 applies for non-compliance, with no demerit points.
• Install your tires when the thermometer repeatedly hovers around 7°C, not on the legal deadline.
• After buying a vehicle, you have 7 days to equip it for winter.
• On used tires, check the depth (aim for at least 4.8 mm), the age (DOT code) and the uniformity of all four tires.
