Buying a used car in Quebec is straightforward… as long as you have the right documents at the right time. The list varies depending on whether you’re buying from a dealer/business or from a private seller. Here’s a clear guide to help you avoid back-and-forth and speed up your transfer with the SAAQ.
Documents generally required for registration / transfer
According to the SAAQ, when you purchase a used vehicle from a merchant, you must present:
The bill of sale
The Office de la protection du consommateur (OPC) reminds that, when dealing with a merchant, the contract must include essential information (price, taxes, total amount payable, warranty details, etc.).
Practical tip: Keep a copy (paper or PDF) of the contract and the transaction attestation; these serve as proof if any questions arise after the sale.
To complete the transfer
The SAAQ states that, for a transfer, both the buyer and the seller must present an official photo ID (usually a driver’s license). The buyer must also provide the vehicle’s mileage (odometer reading).
Important: The SAAQ encourages completing the transfer through SAAQclic when eligible. To use SAAQclic, both the buyer and seller must have created an account.
Contract / proof of purchase (strongly recommended)
The OPC recommends having a written contract between private parties (the Consumer Protection Act does not apply the same way as it does with a merchant).
Even though it’s not mandatory, it is strongly recommended to document key elements of the transaction in writing (price, conditions, inclusions, specifics). In case of issues after the purchase, this document can serve as a reference and help resolve the situation.
If you pay a deposit to the seller, make sure to immediately obtain written proof: a receipt or a copy of the contract clearly stating the amount paid and the date.
Finally, a contract template (such as the one from Protégez-Vous) can help structure the transaction and ensure nothing is overlooked.
If someone is representing you (power of attorney)
If one of the parties cannot be present, a power of attorney may be required; the SAAQ provides a specific form for this.
CAA-Québec also reminds you to be cautious with power of attorney, as the seller remains responsible until the transfer is completed.
If the vehicle is co-owned (two names)
The SAAQ specifies that if the vehicle is co-owned, there are specific requirements, including providing information about the other co-owners (e.g., driver’s license numbers).
