The best used car for students

Student life is hectic and ever-changing, and goes well beyond campus life. These days, most students also have a job. While good public transportation makes getting around easy, students often need a car as they move further from the major city centres. Whether it’s for work or as a way to visit home on the weekends, choosing a good car is important.

A car is often a student’s first credit purchase, which makes it hard for them to borrow large amounts of money. That’s why students generally go for less expensive cars. Still, a small budget is no reason to choose a bad-quality car. Students need to carefully evaluate their needs and see what’s out there before making a decision.

The first idea to spring to mind may be a small, economical model. But is that really the right choice?

It’s important to start by evaluating needs, including:

  • Carpooling opportunities
  • Storage space for luggage when it’s time to head home for the weekend
  • The option to go on road trips during summer break
  • Or a car that can just get you from point A to point B

When deciding make and model, it’s important to consider:

  • Sticker price
  • Operating costs, e.g., maintenance, fuel, insurance
  • Reliability and life span
  • And (of course!) the student’s budget

Car makes that meet these criteria

The first budget-friendly manufacturers that come to mind are KIA and Hyundai. The KIA Forte is the clear winner, followed by the Hyundai Elantra. Both are small sedans that offer good value and cabins that are roomy enough to be comfortable for passengers.

When it comes to low maintenance costs and reliability, Honda and Toyota are leaders of the pack. While more expensive, both are known for their reliability. The Toyota Corolla sedan and hatchback both offer great fuel efficiency. Reliable and affordable, the Corolla definitely provides drivers peace of mind. The Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4 are both excellent models. They are less fuel-efficient than small sedans, but they are reliable and safe and will take students between college, university and home for years to come. They’re also roomy enough for road trips with friends during long school breaks.
