The Weekly Payment Calculation Explained

“How much is it per week?” is often the first question we get asked in front of a vehicle, and it is a good question, provided you know what payment you can actually sustain. Too many buyers start with the vehicle they like, then stretch the financing until the payment fits their budget. The reverse method pays off better, though: set your budget first, then go shopping.

In this article, we give you a simple three-step method: a basic rule to set your ceiling, the list of costs the payment does not cover, and a concrete table of weekly payments by amount financed and loan term. By the end, you will know exactly what price range to target, before you even set foot in a dealership.

Why think in weekly payments?

A vehicle’s listed price says little about what it will cost you each week, once the rate, the term and the down payment are factored in. The weekly payment, on the other hand, compares directly to your reality: your paycheque, your rent or mortgage, your groceries. It is also the most honest unit for comparing two vehicles, as long as you compare financing of the same length. A lower payment obtained by adding two years to the loan is not a saving, it is a deferral.

The 10% rule: your starting point

A simple and widely used benchmark in personal finance is the 20/4/10 rule, popularized notably by the firm J.D. Power: about a 20% down payment, a repayment term ideally capped at 4 years, and vehicle payments (principal, interest and insurance) that do not exceed 10% of your net income, meaning the money actually deposited into your account after taxes.

A concrete example: with a net income of $45,000 a year, the rule gives a maximum of about $87 a week for the vehicle payment and insurance combined. It is a starting point: few debts and no dependants give you some slack, while an already tight budget calls for aiming below the bar. The 4-year term and the 20% down payment, for their part, are demanding in today’s market; we come back to that below.

The payment is only half the story

CAA-Quebec reminds buyers of it in its purchasing guide: operating costs (fuel, maintenance, repairs, tires, parking) easily climb to a third, even half of a vehicle’s total monthly cost. Before setting your maximum payment, set aside part of your transportation budget for:

Insurance: it varies enormously with your age, your record and the model. Ask for a quote before the purchase, not after.

Fuel or electricity: your annual mileage changes everything; a gas-guzzler can cost more at the pump than in payments.

Maintenance and tires: two sets of tires, oil changes and normal wear, to budget for even on a reliable vehicle.

Registration and licence: fixed annual fees that everyone forgets.

How much does each $5,000 financed cost?

Here are orders of magnitude, calculated at a hypothetical rate of 7.99% to illustrate the mechanics. Your actual rate will depend on your credit file and the institution.

Amount financed

48 months

60 months

72 months

84 months

$15,000

about $84/wk

about $70/wk

about $61/wk

about $54/wk

$20,000

about $112/wk

about $93/wk

about $81/wk

about $72/wk

$25,000

about $141/wk

about $117/wk

about $101/wk

about $90/wk

Read this table both ways. Left to right: a longer term lowers the payment, but every added column inflates the interest bill. Top to bottom: each $5,000 slice financed over 60 months costs about $23 more a week. That is a precious reference point. Accessories or a better-equipped trim at $2,500 more means about $12 more every week for five years. It is up to you to decide whether that meets your needs at that cost.

The trap of long terms

The Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC), the federal agency that protects consumers of financial products, puts numbers on the cost of long loans. On $25,000 financed at 5%, interest totals about $1,974 over 36 months, compared to $4,681 over 84 months. More than double, for the same vehicle.

The other risk of longer loans has a name: negative equity, meaning owing more on your loan than the vehicle is worth. Because a vehicle depreciates faster than a long loan gets repaid, a buyer who sells or trades in after two or three years of an 84- or 96-month loan often has to cover the difference. A shorter term, or even a modest down payment, reduces that risk from the moment you sign.

Our Auto Durocher advice: choose the shortest term your budget supports, then, if your loan allows it without penalty, add a few dollars to each payment. On a five-year loan, even $5 more a week shortens the loan and reduces the interest, while bringing you closer to the point where the vehicle is worth more than the balance.

Down payment, trade-in, pre-approval: your three assets

Three moves concretely improve your position before you shop. First, a down payment, even $1,000 or $2,000, reduces the amount financed, the payment and the risk of negative equity. Second, your current vehicle: its trade-in value acts like a down payment; find out its real value before negotiating. Finally, financing pre-approval sets your rate and your borrowing capacity before you fall in love with a vehicle. At Auto Durocher, it takes just a few minutes, with no impact on your credit score.

A complete example, from income to vehicle

Let us put it all together. On a net income of $52,000 a year, the 10% rule gives a ceiling of about $100 a week, insurance included. An insurance quote at around $20 a week leaves $80 for the vehicle payment. At our illustrative rate of 7.99% over 60 months, that payment corresponds to financing of about $17,000. With a down payment or trade-in of $3,000, you are therefore shopping for vehicles around $20,000, taxes included.

That final number can be disappointing compared to the dream vehicle. But it has one immense quality: it is sustainable. And a used vehicle chosen in the right range leaves room in the budget for maintenance, surprises and the rest of your expenses. To understand how the rate affects your payment, our article on interest rates for a used vehicle rounds out this calculation nicely.

What to remember before setting your budget

Start from your net income and the 10% rule to set a weekly ceiling that includes insurance. Reserve part of your budget for operating costs, which easily represent a third to half of the total cost according to CAA-Quebec. Use the $5,000-slice table to translate any price into a payment, choose the shortest sustainable term and arrive at the dealership pre-approved.

What if your credit file has taken some hits?

The method stays exactly the same, with one nuance: a damaged file generally means a higher rate, and therefore a higher payment for the same amount financed. The temptation is then strong to stretch the term to compensate. Aim instead for a vehicle one notch more modest, repay steadily, and every on-time payment rebuilds your file. In two or three years, your next financing will be negotiated on much better terms. A well-managed car loan is one of the most effective tools for rebuilding credit.

Finance your next vehicle with no bad surprises

At Auto Durocher, we work with 18 financial institutions to build financing suited to your real budget, including 2nd and 3rd chance credit if your file has taken some hits: you are not just a number.
